What to do until you get here
Quick first-aid steps based on standard dental advice. Then call us so we can see you today.
Severe toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Floss gently to remove anything stuck between teeth.
- Hold a cold compress on your cheek, 20 minutes on and off.
- Don't put aspirin or painkillers directly on your gums. It can burn the tissue.
Cracked or broken tooth
- Save any pieces of the tooth.
- Rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water.
- Use a cold compress on your cheek to keep swelling down.
- Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
Knocked-out tooth
- Pick it up by the top (the crown), not the root.
- If it's dirty, rinse it gently with water. Don't scrub it.
- Try to put it back in the socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth.
- If it won't go back, keep it in a cup of milk.
- Call us right away. A tooth has the best chance of being saved if it's back in place within an hour.
Lost filling or crown
- Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you.
- A pharmacy dental cement can hold a crown in place for now. Never use household glue.
- Chew on the other side and avoid sticky foods.
Swollen gums or abscess
- Rinse with mild salt water a few times a day.
- Call us today. Infections don't go away on their own and need treatment.
- If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have a fever or trouble swallowing, go to the ER.
Broken braces wire or bracket
- Push a poking wire flat with the eraser end of a pencil.
- Cover sharp spots with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugarless gum.
- Don't cut the wire yourself. Call us and we'll fix it.
